7 Things To Include In Your Child Custody Checklist-For Fathers

By: Shane Boyd

There are many things to consider as you are preparing to win custody of your child in court. Fathers seem to have a more difficult time winning custody than woman, not always but usually. Here's a child custody checklist for you to review that will help you prepare for court. I used many of these things when I fought for custody of my child (and won) over 10 years ago.

1. Hire a really good lawyer. Make sure they are experienced in your specific needs and get references.

2. Make a list of your ex-wife's weaknesses. This will only help you in your case against her. If you have facts about her that would prove her to be an unfit mother, and then buy all means use them to your advantage.

3. Make a list of your ex-wife's strengths. This may sound odd at first, but it will help you prepare to go against her in court. If you know her strengths, you'll know how to counter them in court.

4. Get a list of witnesses that could testify on your behalf (basically telling the judge how you are a great father). Also, get a list of witnesses to testify against your ex-wife if need be. If you don't feel she's a fit mother, then have others prove your case for you.

5. Decide if now is the right time to start dating someone else. The divorce process is a long one and sometimes the judge will frown on you if your already have a live in girlfriend.

6. Make sure you have health and life insurance in place for your child and make sure YOU are the one that took out the policies. This will show the judge YOU are the responsible parent.

7. Sit down with your lawyer and make a list of important things you may not openly share with people. Things like arrests, bankruptcies, affairs, fights, everything. You don't want any surprises in court. If you tell your lawyer these things in advance, he'll be able to work up a defense for them as well.

Having a child custody checklist will help you in your preparation for court. If you put the effort in now, you'll reap the rewards later. I would also suggest you do a lot of reading on the topic of child custody for fathers. It'll only help you in court later. Best of luck to you.
