Available Online Resources For Helping Troubled Teens

By: Joe Goertz

I adore my kids even as teenagers; however, I really wish they could have stayed as innocent and cute as they were when they were younger. If you’re anything like me, you’ve already figured out how challenging it is to raise a teen. There are some difficult issues to overcome – issues like drugs, sex, alcohol and driving carefully. Some days, you find yourself dealing with more than one of these issues at the same time. If you’re handling the whole thing – great! If not and if you find you’re raising a particularly troubled teen, you may be in the market for a center that deals with troubled teens or even a therapist that can help your teen. You may feel in charge of the whole thing one day and feel out of control of things the next. You just never know.

Lucky for those of us raising teens, there are a lot more places and resources available for troubled teens than ever before. Have you ever wondered why this is the case? I personally think it’s because today’s teens have so much more to deal with than ever before. Back when we were younger, we only needed to deal with things like drinking, teen pregnancy and teen sex. Now, teens must deal with diseases like HIV, other STDs and more drug issues than we ever had to deal with. In fact, teen pregnancy is no longer the major issue teens must deal with. Since HIV came along, the whole scheme of things for teens has changed. Hopefully, your teen is like mine. I talked to my teen daughter about many of the issues she may be facing and she told me not to worry – that she wasn’t really interested in teen sex or drugs yet. I felt really lucky and glad that my daughter wasn’t headed to a center for troubled teens any time soon.

My daughter is not perfect, though. I talked to her about not drinking but she went out and drank anyway. She and her friends took some liquor from someone and got drunk. Actually, the word “took” is a little mild. She and her friends actually stole some alcohol. Now she’s paying the price through doing community service. I really hope she’s learning her lesson about how to behave and how not to behave.

If your teen is troubled or just getting into trouble, all you need to do is check out the available resources on the Internet. By doing a brief search, you’ll find out about the various programs available to you and your teen. I personally think it pays to be proactive. By that I mean that you don’t need to wait until things get out of hand. Your child will respond better early on and is worth the effort of finding help before they get into too much trouble.
