Baby Sleep Tips - 7.5 Tips to get your baby to sleep through the night

By: Ceci Davis

Having your baby sleep through the night is not an easy task.

The following advice might make you think it sounds almost like training a puppy,
but you should know that you don't have to be at the baby's mercy.

Assuming that there are no physical problems like colic or teething, here are
7.5 techniques that could help baby sleep better.

1. Make sure that there is plenty of daylight in the house for the baby.

Don't have the shades and blinds closed. When baby is around have as much
natural daylight as possible. Take baby for a stroll during the day or make
sure that baby's caretaker does it.

2. Have baby be active during the day.

If possible take baby to classes that have exercise routines for mom and baby.
Play games. Look at Amazon.com for books on baby games.

3. Don't rush to pick baby up when s/he starts crying during the night.

Sometimes they are not really awake. If you rub baby's tummy, you might get
lucky and baby will go back to sleep.

4. Set up a bed time routine that is nice for baby and you.

Sing a song ie. lullaby while bathing baby. Cuddle and read a book or listen
to music designed to promote sleep. Check Amazon.com for titles. If baby is
fussy, consider a gentle back rub. But don't let baby sleep on the stomach.

5. Stay consistent with the routine for the baby.

Always have the routine you have set up in the same room. Don't have it in
your bedroom one day and in baby's room the next or in the kitchen. Oh, and
please, please have it around the same time everyday!

6. Just before bed have relaxing activities with your baby.

Don't have Dad play catch in the air with the baby before time for bed.
Remove toys from the crib.

7. Don't be too rigid in the routine you have set up for baby.

If baby should become ill or be teething, you can bend the rules a little
but not all together.

7.5 Train your baby to sooth himself/herself back to sleep.

Rub baby's head. Speak soothing words. Maybe consider a pacifier. Make
sure that it is the type shaped in a way that it will not mess up the
baby's teeth.

I invite you to try some of these tips and see if your baby sleeps better.
