By: Ingrid Preube

Addressing the issue of a five year old bed wetting is important. Unless dealt with properly, bed wetting at this age can lead to low self esteem, and an avoidance of any activities that might involve sleeping away from home. These symptoms of the underlying bed wetting problem can persists for many years and it is important that they are dealt with properly. Unfortunately, bed wetting is a difficult problem to resolve and one that will require plenty of time and patience from both the parent and the child.

Taking the child to the doctor is probably a good first step when dealing with bed wetting. Although most bed wetting is completely normal and happens with most children it is important to rule out any underlying medical causes and to ensure that the child is developing normally.

The goal of any bed wetting strategy is to get the five year old child to wake up and go to the bathroom on their own. One way to get started with this is to use a bed wetting alarm. This alarm will wake the child from a deep sleep cycle, one that they might normally not wake from to use the bathroom. Over time this continued training and getting used to waking during the night to use the bathroom should enable the child to wake up on their own to use the bathroom at night.

You should also be aware that the bed wetting problem has little to do with your own parenting skills.

It is important that the children don;t go to bed with a full bladder, so excessive beverage consumption before bed tie should be avoided.

Also to be avoided are caffeinated beverages as these have a diuretic affect.

Obviously bed wetting is a very emotional issue for the children as well as the parents. The child will most likely be ashamed of their bed wetting episodes and care must be taken by the parents to show kindness patience and love. Any signs of anger or impatience at this stage will further embarrass and stress the child and will be of no help with resolving the underlying problem. Encouraging the building of their self esteem and positive reenforcement will both help the child break this habit more quickly.

The bed wetting child is already under a great deal of stress, and as such, their diet or medication should not be changed unless directly approved by the child's doctor. This will help the child to avoid adding further stress in an already stressful time.
