Can I tag-along? A manual to riding together with your child on a child bike trailer.

By: Ian Keyes

Is my daughter mature enough for a bike trailer?

The kid needs to be developmentally set to ride a baby cycle trailer, it's not so much about a definite age. Kids need to be wise enough to keep to your directions and stay on the bike when stopped and when riding. Greg says, 'You don't want them to see a dog running by, get keyed up and jump off to chase it.' When the children are hopping off the tag along, you'll want to be certain that they'll follow your directive to move to the footpath. By the age of five they're pretty likely to be ready, but a number of children might be ready later, various earlier. Your young person also needs to fit a tag along, just as with a normal bicycle. They want to be able to reach the pedals and handlebars comfortably. Seat height can be adjusted - this is widespread to all tag alongs, a number of also allow for handlebar height adjustment.

Take your young person and your cycle with you when going to buy a tag-along. Ask for a test travel from the bicycle shop to help decide

With a tagalong attached, what's it like to travel?

Adults usually find tag-alongs harder in several ways and easier in others. Because of the nature of the attachment mechanism, the bike trailer can sway to one side or the other as you're riding along, which may perhaps make you feel as though you're going to lose balance, although the rocking is more disconcerting than hazardous.

Is a steel or alloy frame best?

When storing or attaching your tag-along, you'll find the lightweight alloy frame the major advantage.

Do I require a tagalong with gears?

They are definitely no use for a younger age range, but they would be useful to help instruct an older young person (aged, say, seven or eight) to use gears. You'd need to do the work to instruct them to use the gears successfully, but it would be easier to do this on a baby bike trailer than on their own bicycle as they don't have to be bothered if they get the incorrect gear. Once they learn the gears they can pedal efficiently uphill, downhill and on the flat (though your child may possibly not see this as an benefit!).

Do I require a collapsible baby cycle trailer?

At a number of points, even if it's only back from the bicycle shop you're likely to require to transport your tag a long bike in a car. A folding tagalong is very helpful for this because, unfolded, they are longer than will fit in the average boot. A folding baby bike trailer is also handy for storage.

Is there any other gear I should purchase?

A mudguard on the tag a long bike's frame and/or on your rear wheel to prevent dirt from flicking up from your wheel onto your youngster is worth taking into consideration. Mud guards come as standard on a number of models

How does the tag along connect to the parent's cycle?

Most tag-a-longs join to the seat-post of the adult's bicycle. various models attach to a rack. To reduce stress on the seat-post and lessen swaying the child cycle trailer attachment should be fitted as low down as possible on the seat-post so it is close to the frame.

Can I use a tag-along with two bikes?

In the situation where one parent drops the youngster at daughter daycare or school and the other does the pick up the capacity to swop the baby bike trailer between cycles is fantastic. To allow the baby bike trailer to be switched between bicycles you can often pay money for a second hitch.

How long will a baby bike trailer last?

Depending on how much it's cycled, how it's looked after and stored will effect a tag a long bike's life span.. As with any cycle tyre and chain will wear and while it might feel disturbing for the parent rider, increased swaying from side to side is not in itself dangerous.
