Essay Writing – Starting Tips For The Perfect Paper

By: Aaron Martinez

Every spring thousands of students around the world prepare for exams and term papers. Alongside the persuasive speech genre, essays are the most common way in which teachers and professors assess their students. No matter what the reason is for writing an essay - educational, professional or just for fun - the end result can be greatly enhanced if the author is structured from the beginning of the process.

Although there are many different ways in which to design and produce essays, they are all limited by their topics. In many cases the topic is given before work is started, but if the writer is given a choice, it is important to keep in mind to which opportunities and limitations this choice might lead. When the topic is set, different approaches has to be taken to the writing process depending on which type of essay is to be written, the size of it, and how much time is available.

Non-Fictional Writing is Not Poetry – Why a Topic is Important and Some Suggestions
If a student, professional writer or hobby writer can choose the topic for the essay, it is important to think further than just what is the most interesting or fun to the author. It is of course vital to have some interest in or at the very least understanding for any topic written about, but in addition it is vital to consider at whom the work is directed and in which format it is presented. A topic suitable for an erotic magazine might not be the best choice for a school paper, for instance.

It might also be helpful to consider whether the writer works best with broad topics leaving lots of opportunities or narrow ones confining thought and effort. The following list will focus on the argumentative essay, which is the most common. When writing this type of essay the author should aim not to choose a topic which is overdone. This is not always as easy as it sounds when trying to find something which is fairly interesting while at the same time controversial.

Some possible topics:
Is money free speech (for and against 'hard' and 'soft' money in politics)?
NATO - Defense or aggression (Iraq and Afghanistan as focal points)?
Alternative energy - A job for business or government (especially in the U.S.)?
Should public life be secular (France and the U.S. vs. Scandinavia and Iran)?
Growth for the sake of growth - Can a sound environment and unchecked capitalism co-exist?
Is development aid working?
Modern USA - An imperialist nation with an anti-imperialist past?
Will the United Kingdom play a major role in the power struggles of the 21st Century?
Is the oil for food program disrupting the long term development of third world countries?
Should drugs be allowed in sports?
Copyright laws - A dinosaur in the computer age?
Is the EU a constitutional threat to its member countries?
Could more direct democracy work on a global scale (use Switzerland as an example)?
Modern football (soccer) - A threat against the fans (ultras, casuals, business takeovers etc.)?
Art and politics - Can creativity be measured in money?

Rules to Follow When Writing an Essay
There of course are many different ways in which to write a successful essay, especially considering the many formats this genre holds. Nevertheless a basic formula applicable to most if not all essays exist. But before the writing can commence, two steps should be taken in order to secure the best end result possible:

Brainstorm the chosen topic and do research on specifics if necessary
Structure the information via short bullet points (what goes where?)
When the information is gathered and structured, it is time to start writing:
The introduction should consist of 1-3 paragraphs and outline the body (a teasing summary introducing the main thesis)

The body may in theory consist of as many paragraphs as wanted, but consistency is virtuous. Each paragraph should debate/explain one supporting idea and conclude on at the end

The conclusion is both a summary and, more importantly, a tool used to trigger further thought based on the main idea conveyed. Any form of debate is meant to pull society forward, and if an essay spawns a new debate it is very successful

A Novel Thought Inspires and Excites
When choosing the topic for any given essay one should always think of what the goals are with the end result. Some authors might write because of idealism or personal fulfillment, while others seek a good grade or to get paid. Whatever the reasons the reader(s) must feel that they have gained something when they are done reading. Thus the best advice for the essay writer will always remain to take a novel and unique approach to the task at hand - inspire and excite!
