How To Choose A Doula

By: SWilson

A lot of moms today feel the need to have a doula. Moms want to feel connected with their newborns during childbirth and thus, wanting to minimize and get rid of all unnecessary interventions as much as possible. This type of birth may be made possible through the help of nurses or a doula. A doula can help moms feel more connected to their newborns during childbirth by making use of different types of practices within a cozy and very comfortable environment. Doulas usually believe in the fact that babies can have fewer problems and may be treated to breastfeed right away if delivered without further interventions. In this article, we will share with you tips on how to choose a doula.

On your first visit to your doula, take time to observe not only her practices but more importantly, her personality. Are you comfortable with her? Does she make you at ease? It is very important that you find one whom you can be comfortable with and whose abilities you can trust and rely upon. At this point, the doula can assess what exactly it is that you are looking for. This is a good time for you and your health practitioner to leverage all expectations about your child birth. More often than not, you will be discussing topics like traditional assessments, your general health and complications and your pregnancy history. Your initial visit to your doula simply gives you the chance to know her better and find out more about her delivery style. After your introductory visit to your doula, keep in mind that another important visit is that which you will make 2 weeks before you are due. This will serve as a dry run before your actual delivery. Selecting a doula is all about personal choice. You may want to consider some of these questions before you make your final decision. Your answers should highly influence your decision

 Do you want to deliver in a private place?
 Are you open to cover added costs which may be incurred in your delivery?
 How important for you is a routine ultrasound?
 Do you want to use pain relievers during the labor process?
 Will you be comfortable if you give birth at home?
 Are you open to water births?
 Do you want your partner or a relative to be at your side during your delivery?

Most doula services are very reasonable. However, they vary from one practitioner to another, from one state to another state. Doulas are also not covered by insurance companies. Usually, in-hospital delivery may require more costs than a home delivery. If you want to save and pay less, you may consider giving birth at home as an option.

Your doula will provide invaluable assistance during labor and childbirth. If you are pregnant and you want a natural, safe, relaxing and happy birth experience, using the services of a doula may be a good option for you. Keep the above tips in mind and have a wonderful birthing experience!
