Is Your Infant Bedding Set Harmless?

By: Ashley Smith

It's hard to imagine but according to studies 6000 babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome every year while 900 of these deaths are actually caused by soft nursery bedding. So how can you be sure that any bedding bought for your baby will be safe?
When you place the baby on her belly, her head may sink into the mattress and cause suffocation if the bedding is too soft. You may think a soft mattress is more comfortable for your little one, but if it is too soft, it may not be safe. They might not have the strength to roll over to recover from the dangerous position and the fatal accidents might happen if no one is around to take good care of the little one and as infants are too weak, when their heads are being placed on the soft mattress.
parents can select a baby nursery bedding with a firm mattress that does not get depressed easily when some weight is being applied on it in order to avoid accidents. By applying force to a certain mattress one can actually feel it resisting the weight and it's actually one way of discovering the mattress strength. The more resistance a mattress demonstrates, the better the mattress.
Bumper pads are often added to a crib to give it a designer look; but a baby can suffocate if he becomes stuck with his face pressed into one.
Parents should take extra care for infants, as during this time infants are very weak. When babies are pressed between the bumper pads and another object and some of the people recommend to buy firmer bumper pads while others just remove all of them from the crib and the latter being the best method because, though rare, there are also cases of strangulation by the strings of the bumper pads and suffocation.
Another danger to the baby's well-being are toxic gases, detected inside of mattresses by researchers. Some researchers have found that phosphorus and arsenic which are generally used as fire retardants, are added to mattresses which can be very harmful. These chemicals can react with others and release poisonous gases; if an infant breathes too much of these, he can die while sleeping in his crib.
It has been proven that fungus that grows in infants bedding may release toxic gases. Because of that, they suggest that mom and dads not use any older style bedding in the baby's room that could have mold and/or mildew on it from being used prior. Babies crib bedding should not be reused from one baby to another because old bedding can carry fungus. Buying a new set of nursery bedding adds a fresh look to the baby's room.
Using these guidelines, it should be easy for a parent to determine if their baby's nursery bedding is safe. If not, purchase a new, safe bedding option so that your baby can sleep safely and you can sleep without worries.

In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton nursery bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby bedding set by Trend Lab), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.
