Kids in Cars: Surviving the Road Trip

By:

If you’re planning to take the family over the river and through the woods, make sure you plant to entertain your youngest crew members. Avoid the notorious “are we there” conversation by packing games and activities to keep your children entertained.

While planning a road trip, make sure none of you is prone to motion sickness otherwise your holiday will turn into a nightmare. In case anyone of you experiences motion sickness while riding in a car, contact a physician and take the prescribed medication with you. You can try over the counter medication like Dramamine for preventing motion sickness. Also, pack some snacks that help queasy stomachs.

You may not be able to find kid friendly food on the road. So, pack your own food to avoid relying on greasy, unhealthy fast food or sugary snacks that will make your children hyper. It's best to pack natural, healthy items like trail mix, granola bars, or fruit. Avoid packing foods that are difficult to eat or need preparation before consuming. Also, carry some extra items like silverware and napkins in your bag.

In case your health permits you to read while riding, you can declare a story time, for which the kids are going to love you. Carry along books that happen to be the absolute favorites of your kid. Apart from the educational books you can also include a book or two on the destination you are going to be visiting, setting the tone of excitement right in the ride itself.

Many individuals cannot ride in cars and read a book. For that reason, bring along a book on tape or CD. This eliminates any arguments regarding differing musical tastes. A wide variety of books are available as audio books, many of which are read by favorite actors or the author his or herself.

For especially long car rides, purchase a small toy or game for your child. Give this item to your child during the trip. Include things like traveling puzzles, activity or coloring books, or small toys your child can easily play with while in the car. Items like paper dolls, matchbox cars, or small action figures are great for traveling in cars. Avoid bringing large toys or toys with many parts on road trips.

Another way to keep your children busy in the car on a long trip is to install a portable television or DVD player. They are very affordable these days and you buy one for less than a hundred dollars. Alternatively, you can consider borrowing a portable model from a friend, neighbor, or family member, if you can't afford to buy one. If you manage to get one, you can let your children choose their favorite movies or television shows for the trip. This will give everyone a chance to view their favorites during the trip.

The key to riding in cars with children is to keep them entertained. Many individuals grew up playing fun road trip games like license plate bing-o that never go out of style. Regardless if you are in the car for one mile or one thousand miles, turn a road trip into a fun experience for the entire family.
