Long Distance Love

By: Antony Zimmer

I think the hardest love to fall for, besides a love that can’t or won’t be returned, is long distance love. You get to see a lot of this online. There are no boundaries. There are no rules of engagement. All that exists is a search page of criteria that can be tuned to as broad or narrow field as your mind can imagine--and your heart can bear. I’m always steering away from these types of relationships, but that doesn’t stop them from popping up. There seems to be something extra-special about the long distance contacts I do make. The impossibility of it all adds a romance factor that’s hard to attain when chatting with people you meet who are within realistic reach. Even people who are only a couple of hours away seem less like a possibility than those on the other side of the country. A two hour drive is a hassle. A six hour plane flight is an adventure! Seeing as I’m the type that needs that glimmer of magic to really fall in love, this puts me in an awkward spot. I met a girl on Match recently from Vancouver. I know next-to-nothing about her. I’ve seen her pictures and she’s beautiful in my eyes. She writes well. Beyond that, I know nothing. If she lived here, I would certainly make the effort to see her as soon as I could. Now I have some time off coming up, and I’ve planned a couple of vacations. One is a local trip with my family. The other is to someplace warm. I want to relax on a beach, sip drinks, play volleyball and swim with dolphins. My trip with family is set. I can’t change that. My trip to the beach isn’t set. It wouldn’t be hard to change my plans and book a flight to Vancouver instead. If someone told me that the love of my life was living in Vancouver waiting for me, I’d stop this sentence here, grab a bag and head for the airport. I’m not sure whether it’s fortunate or not that love is much more complicated than that.
