We have all heard that pregnant women should avoid caffeine, alcohol, and certain over-the-counter and prescription drugs. But there are a lot of other substances women should be cautious of during pregnancy. Below is a list of some of the more surprising things, and what risks they may pose to an unborn child.
Herbs and Supplements
Many women do not realize that herbs and other supplements can be harmful. After all they're natural, right? Well, natural does not always mean safe. Many herbs and supplements have not been tested by the FDA and their effects on the fetus are completely unknown. It is best to get all your dietary needs through natural foods and avoid herbal remedies completely. If there is something you feel you need to take, consult with your doctor first.
Too Much Stress
It is natural and normal to be stressed during your pregnancy. Your body is under a great deal of stress, and your mind is working overtime with worry about your baby. That's why it's so important to keep any extra stress to a minimum. Studies show that extreme stress over a long period of time can lead to low birth weight and premature delivery. So make sure to take the time to learn some strategies for stress management. That way you will be prepared to take good care of yourself and your baby when you encounter a difficult situation.
Chemicals
It is nearly impossible to avoid coming in contact with chemicals. They are everywhere in our modern world. In household cleaners, paint, and even the air we breathe. So is there anything you can do? Yes. Just by being aware and careful, you can avoid absorbing many of those toxic substances. Hire someone to clean or get help cleaning if you can. If that is not possible, wear rubber gloves and a filter mask when working around the house. Also, keep away from places with a lot of chemicals, like photo processing stores and hospitals.
Pets
This is a shock to a lot of people, but pets can carry a lot of diseases or cause injuries. Dogs, for example, can jump on you or trip you, and a bad fall can put your pregnancy at risk. Reptiles often carry salmonella (even if they have tested negative)and they can carry a number of other diseases. Rodents carry a bacteria called lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Cat feces can give you a dangerous parasite called toxoplasmosis that can cause a miscarriage or birth defect! If you can, get a pet sitter during the term of your pregnancy, and ask someone else to clean up after any pets. It's better to be safe than sorry!
Excessive Heat
Another surprise to a lot of people is how dangerous overheating can be to the fetus. Avoid any activity that will raise your body temperature far above the normal range. Stay away from hot tubs, saunas, and electric blankets. Go ahead and soothe your aching muscles with a heating pad or warm bath, but do so with caution. Also try to stay inside during really hot weather.
There are more things to watch out for, of course, but these are a few of the lesser known ones. Definitely do research, and talk to your doctor as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Follow these little precautions and you will have a better chance of delivering a healthy baby.
