Student Essay Writing Tips Explained

By: Willie Mitchell

Throughout your time in college or university, you will need to write essays as the main bulk of your work, and having a key strategy for writing these will be imperative.

Know the material. The first step in preparing to write an essay is to read all the material you need to know about the topic. Take notes and read over these notes regularly until you have knowledge of the topic, or print off pre-written notes. Make sure you have enough information available to you to know what you are writing about before you start to write.

Relax. Especially if you are writing an important essay, or an essay in an exam, its vital that you relax before you start to write. Breathe in and out a few times and take a few minutes to read and think about the exam. If you start straight away, you will be feeling the stress and are more likely to write a bad essay than if you are composed and focused on the task in hand.

Understand the question - if you know form the start what the purpose of your essay is going to be, then this will place you at a huge advantage over other people. You need to understand what the question is asking you and what you need to do in order to answer it and thus receive a higher grade. You should also keep in mind the word count for the essay, as getting this wring could be a huge blunder.

Interpret the question - simply reading the words of what you have to write your essay on will not get you anywhere, as you will need to fully understand what it is you will be writing about. You should understand key phrases in question and some include: criticize, justify, evaluate, discuss and explain. These all mean a number of things to different people and will show that you will need to understand the task at hand before beginning to write.

Set a schedule - knowing when your essay is to be handed in and when you need to have it completed by will probably put your mind at rest. You will need to establish a plan of the different things that you will be doing throughout the different parts of your essay, including the research and writing stages.

Make some notes - if you spend a few minutes figuring out exactly what you would like to say and plan the different stages of your essay then you will be able to have a clear understanding of the direction in which you will be going. This will help you ensure that repetition doesn't appear in your writing and that all relevant angles are covered.

Start strong - your first sentence in your essay will be the most powerful for the reader, it should grab their attention and encourage them to read the entire content of your essay, and not be put off by not really wanting to read the rest of your work.

Check your question as you go - this is the key area where a lot of people fail - not answering the question. You should check the question time and again when you are reading over your essay, as you will need to make sure that you are on track and know what you are writing about is on topic.

Don't panic. If you are running out of time or things to say, remember that you can list the points you want to say and this will show that you did have the knowledge to answer the question. Don't rush, or try to ramble or cram, as this could undermine the rest of your essay. A simple one sentence conclusion emphasizing your main point should be a sufficient to sum up if you become too stuck.

Proof your work - proofreading your work once you have finished is a must, as you will need to ensure that you will have written your work and not missed anything out, but also that you have not made any silly mistakes during your writing - some of these mistakes make cost you marks, so you should check your work to ensure it is correct.
