The IELTS Writing Exam - Why It Is Important

By: Michael Harris

Many colleges or countries will have a person take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) prior to entry. There are different reasons for the college or country to require this of someone but it is to ensure overall proficiency in the English Language. The IELTS writing portion of the test is something that people need to be prepared for.

There are two different formats for the IELTS, which has been used since 1989. One format is used by schools to ensure that prospective students are proficient enough at English to understand the material that will be given to them in class. The other format is used by several countries to ensure that someone is able to communicate in English once they enter the country.

Testing is broken into four parts, speaking, writing, reading, and listening. The total duration of the entire testing procedure is two hours and forty five minutes with each category being broken into specifically timed segments. Scoring is by a band rating which ranges from 0 for not attempting the test to 9 for being an expert user.

An individual is given 60 minutes to complete the writing section of the test. Both the academic and the general formats of the test give this amount of time and both will have the same format for the writing section. Although both types of testing will require the same format of that section the questions posed in the writing section are different. Both types will require the person taking the test to complete two writing tasks.

In the general writing exam a person will have two questions that they will have to write about. They will first write 150 words or more in a letter format. The second section will be 250 words or more written on an essay based on a given topic. They are given 60 minutes to complete this section.

There are two questions to answer in the academic writing exam. The individual will first write an essay on a picture or graphic that they are shown in 150 or more words. The next portion of the test is an argumentative essay that will be 250 or more words. These two answers must be finished within 60 minutes.

An individual will take the IELTS to show proficiency in understanding the English language. The academic and general tests are the two different tests that someone may have to take. Understanding the types of questions asked in the IELTS writing section of the exam is a key to success in taking it.
