Tips On Selecting A College

By: Michael Harris

Just when you are about to finish high school, it is time to plan ahead. College brings both more freedom and more responsibility. The time to apply gets closer and closer. Preparation is extremely important, but you also have to meet your responsibilities associated with finishing high school, including keeping up your grades. Follow a few tips and the decision-making process will go much smoother, and your college experience more rewarding.

Evaluate what is you want in a school. Do you want to be near home, or attend a school far away? Find a list of universities that offer degree programs that you are interested in. A general liberal arts education will leave your choices wide open, while specialty subjects will narrow your choices. The latter could still leave you with a decent list of colleges to check out. Broaden your resources to include college guides and even websites with searchable databases that can help narrow down your choices.

Take a trip. It is always exciting to get away, so use that excuse to visit the schools of your choice. You don't know what the college is like unless you've been on campus. Its programs, activities, location, and reputation say a great deal, but once you've spoken to staff and administration, even students, and even roamed the campus, you will have a feel for what is like for you to be there. With this impression, you should know whether or not you would fit in there.

Know when all the deadlines are. It is imperative that you know all of the deadlines for school applications, tests, financial aid, housing, classes, and many other things. Get a calendar and write it all down so it can be referred to often. Remember, if you miss a deadline, you've missed the opportunity. There's no going back.

Confused? It is a lot to take in. College is a big step in your life and it can be overwhelming. Don't be afraid to consult with family and counselors. There are many people who have experienced the college life that you are preparing for and still others that offer advice as part of their job. Don't fear asking around or asking those that know you for their opinion.

Once you have completed all of the decision making, it is time to apply. You should always have a few schools in mind, including the top ones which are most likely to admit you and a couple of others, that are a fit, but serve as a backup if the top choices don't work out. Make sure you are familiar with the school's application process and be patient with getting all the details right. If 1 or more colleges accept you, that is good. You've succeeded in the first step, but be aware of further deadlines and milestones ahead.
