What train collector does not know the name Hornby Thomas? World renowned, Hornby Thomas designed dozens of 00 gauge model train set. Of the six collections of model trains Hornby Thomas created and gathered together, Thomas and Sons is one of the most popular, if not the most popular. Other Hornby Thomas train collections include the precious Harry Potter train collection for the younger set, various steam locomotive groups, one collection of diesel locomotives, and rolling freight and passenger stocks.

Hornby Thomas and Sons began its commercial sale of train sets with Percy the Small Engine. In 1967 it was introduced by retailer Meccano as part of one of its own train collection sets.

TV was actually the catalyst for the commercialization and the burgeoning popularity of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. A 1985 TV show, whose name was also Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends had children all over clamoring for their own identical train set. Prior to that, however, a book collection, introduced in 1950 by Christopher and Wilber Awdry, a father and son writing team, was called the Railway Series. In this collection the character of Thomas the Tank Engine was portrayed.

One captivating story by Hornby Thomas takes place on the fictitious island of Sodor. Here Percy the live steam engine lives with his buddies Henry the Green Engine, Gordon the Big Engine, and Thomas the Tank engine. Percy, the tiniest train engine on Sodor and number six in the line of engines, is nevertheless the most assertive of them all.

In this Hornby Thomas story another character, the Fat Controller, brings little Percy the live steam engine to the island of Sodor as part of a resolution for an ongoing island train engine strike. Percy is bullied by all the bigger train engines at first, until he earns their respect and becomes their friend. Percy gets promoted to goods hauler on the Hornby Thomas branch train line. Thomas the Tank Engine and Toby the tram engine become Percy the live steam engine’s best friends.

For those who want to accessorize their Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends or other Hornby Thomas train collections, there are lots of ways to do that. Thomas accessories include electrically operated turntables, train track fixing pins, parts for signal crossing and level crossing that come as one kit, and a 100-piece kit for planning a track. With the latter you can design your train track set before buying the various parts.
