What You Need To Know Before Choosing Cesarean

By: SWilson

Choosing cesarean can be quite risky as compared to normal vaginal delivery. Just like any surgery, it exposes the mother as well as the baby to higher risks of infection. Given this, it is very important that you keep yourself aware about how the process goes, its consequences and the reasons why your better option is the C-section and not normal delivery. In this article, we will share with everything that you need to know about classic cesarean.

What is classic cesarean?
Cesarean section is the process of delivering a baby through surgical incision in the mother's uterus and abdomen and not through normal vaginal delivery. In some situations, the cesarean operation may be scheduled ahead of time.

Oftentimes, a cesarean delivery is indicated by an unforeseen complication during the pregnancy which may put the baby or the mother in harm. A cesarean operation is a major abdominal surgery which simply means that it is riskier as compared to vaginal delivery. Mothers who undergo classic cesarean are prone to infection, blood clots. Postpartum pain, excessive bleeding, longer hospital stay and a longer recovery at the same time.

Moreover, if you plan on having more children, each operation you have can increase your future risks of complications like placenta accreta and placenta previa. All these being said, it is highly advised that you avoid the C-section unless your situation calls you to do so. If you and your baby are free of complications and you opt for cesarean simply because you want to free yourself from the excruciating pain that comes with normal labor, you might as well consider re-thinking your options over and over again.

So when should you consider C-section as the best option?
In some cases, it is clear that a woman needs a cesarean operation before she even goes into labor. There are a few conditions that may require a planned cesarean birth. This includes the following:

 You have undergone previous cesarean operation with a vertical uterine incision. Your doctors may also consider cesarean delivery if you have had more than one previous C-section. If you had only one with a horizontal incision, you may be advised to have VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) instead.

 You have undergone other kinds of invasive surgery like myomectomy (removal of the fibroids).

 You are carrying a twins or triplets. While yes delivering more than one baby may be possibly done through the normal vaginal delivery, all higher-order multiples require a cesarean operation.

 Your baby is very large. This condition is called macrosomia. This may be possible especially if you are diabetic or if you have had a baby of the same size who has suffered trauma during vaginal delivery.

 Your baby is in breech or transverse position. By breech, we mean bottim first and by transverse, we mean sideways position. In cases like twin pregnancy wherein the first baby is in normal position and the second one is in breach, the first baby may be delivered normally.

If your doctor tells you that cesarean delivery is your best option, take time to research information as much as you can.
